Description

THODKIN’S SPEAR is an immensely readable — and highly original — “fictional” grand tour through the big issues facing mankind at this evolutionary turning point: longevity, morality, truth, evolution, reason, religion, an afterlife, and the advance of science and technology, just to name a few. Scott Ellison paints possibilities with a wise and colorful brush in this literate, entertaining and important book.

Okay, we’re biased, but that’s what we think about ‘Spear.

Theme: Positive self-evolutionary futures are possible if somebody teaches us how to create evolutionary personalities.

Synopsis:

In a little pub on a downtown side-street of Princeton New Jersey, Thodkin Marblemiester sits waiting for the Author of the Universe (AOU) to return from the men’s room. The AOU looks a lot like the recently deceased Lexius Acura as he shuffles back to the booth, And in true fact — or such is the claim — the AOU has refurbished Lexius’s old body and is using it while solving a little technical problem he has had with the core nature of our universe.

Thodkin had succeeded, a little too easily, in convincing the AOU to buy him lunch and is tolerantly not too surprised when the AOU wastes no time disclosing his status as the maker of our universe. Thodkin is always interested in oddities and takes the declaration in stride. Like many people, he has certain questions at-the-ready, should he happen upon a maker of universes, so, with sincere tones, he asks Lexius/AOU his hardest questions.

It is a good lunch and interesting as well, as, over a hamburger, fries and beer, Thodkin gently tries to pry forth comprehensible answers from a probable lunatic. He is surprised at the ensuing cohesive dialog as AOU explains the errors of conventional thinking about the origins of all things and the intentions he had for the Force Bottle that holds our universe.

Thodkin ages only 1 year to every 365 years normal humans age which makes him a 10,000-year-old man in terrific physical condition for his age. Physically, he is in his mid-thirties. He is the only mutation of his kind still living, but despite his age, he has not succumbed to despair or given up hope on our species. Naturally, he has been around the block and he does get bored watching humanity repeatedly squander the opportunity of civilization. So occasionally he is put at risk by his need to explore anomalies on the planet — just to stay entertained with life. He unknowingly takes just such a risk when he accepts the AOU’s invitation to continue their conversation at a co-opted biolab on the Princeton campus…etc.
